Riding on roads is for the newbies. If you’re up for a tougher challenge and want to take your cycling to the next level well there’s a trail ride in the waiting. So if you’re in Delaware and up for the ride here are some places we recommend you pay a visit.
Cape Henlopen State trail
This is a 4-mile trail with loads of scenic spots in and around the area one of which is the World War 2 tower. Rider and runners love to take a break and go up the stairs to enjoy the panoramic view of the entire area.
Apart from that, you’ll find paths that lead to the dunes and spots inhabited by plenty of deer. The fishing camps, Gordon’s pond and the cape where migrating birds are present are some other points of interest.
Those looking for a short and quiet getaway from the busy city streets on their bikes will love this trail. Most of the trail is along a deserted road which ultimately connects to the New Castle and the famous Wilmington Riverfront.
It’s a 4-5 mile long trail that starts around Christina River and ends near the castle. In between, you’ll get awesome urban landscape views and lush green fields. It’s the perfect trail for the newbie riders.
This trail is present in the area around the Trap pond and since it runs across a forest and a dam present at the Raccoon pond you can expect some amazing panoramic views so carry your camera along.
Another point of interest is the Cypress point and is one the top spots for birdwatchers around the country. The cypress trees are home to a variety of bird species such as woodpeckers etc. An age-old stone church is worth a stop but the best part remains the pond camping site.
The Breakwater trail
This is one of the lengthiest trails in the list and stretches to a total of about 6-7 miles. It begins at the Gills Neck road and ends at the Rehoboth beach. The trail is mostly stone clad with a few smooth areas towards the end so prep for a bumpy ride.
On your ride, you’ll come across wetlands near Holland Glade and further down some cornfields, thick pine forest trees and some wildlife such as geese, squirrels, deer etc. The various outlets give you the opportunity to fuel up during the rides.
Before you hit any of these trails make you’re well trained and prepared. Clock miles riding uphill and downhill on roads and integrate other muscle strengthening workouts into your routine such as a treadmill or rowing machine workout. Concept2 Model D rowers are the most comfortable, challenging and yet affordable rowers.
Also make sure you carry the required equipment and gear. Water bottles, puncture kit, first aid box etc. are simply a must.
